Re: City Logo Design Process
____________________________________________________________________
Summary
On May 11, 2023, City Council approved staff to move forward and create a new city logo using
99designs, an online graphic design vendor. Once the project starts, it has a quick turnaround of
approximately 25 days.
99designs
This online vendor offers clients a logo design contest between designers around the world. We
may receive 5 logos or 100 logo design ideas. Costs for the project is $299-$499.
City department directors asked 6 employees between Administration, Public Works, and the
Police Department to be on the city logo work team. The team’s role is to make the project
successful by actively collaborating with 99designs to reach the goal of a new city logo.
The team will:
1.Present a design brief to 99designs.
2.Launch the design contest tentatively on October 2, 2023. A tentative Council work
session is scheduled for October 26, 2023. The timeline is based on Council’s calendar.
3.Follow the design contest stages and meet all deadlines.
1.Create a positive equitable community input process.
2.Present final logo design options to Council.
Agenda Item: 2.
Contest Stages
The city logo work team will present a design brief to 99designs. The design brief includes a
summary of who we are, our target audience, stylistic preferences, colors, and reference images.
The design brief starts the contest stages. The stages are as follows:
Stage 1
•Qualifying Round. Designer’s will submit logo ideas. This is open for 4 days.
Stage 2
•Selecting finalists 3-6 designs will move into a final round. This is open for 4 days (refund
no longer available after this stage).
Stage 3
•Final round. We have 3 days to revise the finalist’s designs.
Stage 4
•Select winner/logo. The contest has ended. We have 14 days to pick the winning design.
Stage 5
•Once there is a winner chosen there is a handover stage. Minor revisions, color, sizes can
be made. There is a 5-day window for this stage.
Next Steps
Council is asked to provide staff feedback on a design and visual style Council is looking to
achieve to include colors. This will help the designers create the design vision of the logo.
Examples of other Minnesota city logos and different color palettes are attached.
Council is asked to provide staff feedback on the recommended community input process. Staff
recommend two options:
1.Facebook Survey – allows for the community to choose their favorite logo design
virtually. This can be shared on neighborhood and community groups Facebook
pages.
2.City Lobby – 3 finalists logo designs will be displayed in City Hall for community
members to vote on.
